The Gauntleteers: These 7 Comic Book Characters Held The Infinity Gauntlet And Fans Don’t Know About It

There is no doubt that the Infinity Gauntlet is the supreme weapon in the Marvel Universe, but, as we have seen in the post-credits cameos by Thanos, the Infinity Gauntlet is nothing more than a fancy glove without the Infinity Stones. They were initially called the Soul Gems, and later became known as the Infinity Gems in comics. In the iconic 1970s story by Jim Starlin, The Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos got all six Infinity Stones and endangered the whole universe. After several years of wait, Thanos (Josh Brolin) did the same on the big screen. Although, he is the only one in the movies to wield the Gauntlet, there are other Marvel characters who have wielded the power of the Stones. Let’s take a look at some of them!

SPIDER-MAN

Right across the 2000s, the Marvel Adventures series showed the Marvel heroes in a new light. This series had some major titles like The Avengers and the Infinity Gauntlet. The 2010 miniseries by Brian Clevinger, Lee Black, and Brian Churilla showed the Avengers travel to space to take on Thanos after he had killed half of the Universe.

During their final battle, Spider-Man managed to snatch the Infinity Gauntlet using his webs, away from Thanos. After he hit Thanos with an energy blast, he used the gauntlet and changed the history so that Thanos never discovered the Gauntlet. Although this erased the whole story, Thanos and Spider-Man remembered what had happened.

 CAPTAIN AMERICA

Towards the late 2000s, Illuminati’s existence was revealed, and it caused turmoil in the Marvel Universe. Although the superhero group secretly shaped the Marvel Universe, they battled a great challenge when they found that another parallel reality was headed to collide with Earth. The 2013 comics, New Avengers #3 by Jonathan Hickman and Steve Epting showed how the Illuminati used the Infinity Gauntlet to avoid this. Captain America was given the Gauntlet. Although the device was powerful enough to prevent the collision, all the Infinity Stones were destroyed in the process. After the Illuminati hesitatingly vowed to annihilate any other threatening Earths, the incident was wiped off Captain’s memory.

BLACK PANTHER

After interferences from parallel worlds destroyed the Marvel multiverse, an almighty Doctor Doom picked up the shards of the destroyed universes to forge Battleworld in the 2015’s Secret Wars. The iconic crossover event from Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic, the surviving heroes, teamed up to beat Doom and restore the main multiverse. Doctor Strange, who was working as Doom’s sheriff, succeeded in creating a new Infinity Gauntlet using the Stones and let another hero use it.

Black Panther found the Gauntlet in Secret Wars #6, after Strange had died. Using the incredible power of the Gauntlet, T’Challa managed to prevail against the almighty Doom in their final battle. Battlefield was destroyed, and Doom was defeated before Black Panther used Time Stone to go back to Wakanda and a prior to the start of the incursions.

IRON MAN

In Marvel Comics, Tony Stark was the first person who freely used all the Infinity Stones in one go. A petty crime-lord called The Hood had mega dreams, and he tried to collect all the Infinity Stones to kill The Avengers. Although he stole most of the Stones, Iron-Man fooled him and took all the Stones from him to create the Infinity Gauntlet in 2011’s Avengers #12 created by Brian Michael Bendis and John Romita Jr.

After he used the Infinity Gauntlet to put Hood into the jail, the Iron-Man apparently wanted the Infinity Stones to stop existing. However, he kept the Gauntlet and distributed the Stones among the Illuminati, and Captain America replaced Black Bolt in the group. Later in the cartoon series Avengers Assemble, Stark held the Stones in Avengers Tower, where they manipulated him slowly.

NEBULA

Before appearing as an antihero in last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Nebula (Karen Gillan) had started as a side-villain in the MCU. In the 1985 comics Avengers #257, Nebula first appeared and was created by Roger Stern and John Buscema. She was a second-tier Avengers villain. Yet, she happened to be the last villain in The Infinity Gauntlet.

Once when Thanos was distracted, Nebula stole the Infinity Gauntlet and threatened the whole Universe. Thanos had to join hands with Hulk, Adam Warlock, Thor and various cosmic beings to beat her. Nebula was imprisoned for her crimes, and Thanos retired to a life of peaceful farming.

DARKSEID

Back in 2003, Marvel and DC had a crossover, JLA/Avengers. In that epic series, Kurt Busiek and George Perez paired the two universes to create numerous mind-blowing moments. In one stunning scene, Darkseid, the top DC villain, got the Infinity Gauntlet with all six Infinity Stones in place.

Various mighty DC and Marvel objects were hidden around, and somehow the Infinity Gauntlet happened to be in Darkseid world, Apokolips. He managed to figure out the power of the Stones; he also knew that the Gauntlet didn’t work outside its home realm. What shocked the readers was that he threw the Gauntlet to the ground and dispersed an assembly of heroes.

THE FLASH

Back in 1996’s Marvel vs. DC, Wally West aka third Flash proved that he was the Fastest Man Alive when he outpaced Quicksilver, the speedster from Marvel. They again raced when a couple of cosmic beings Korona and the Grandmaster pit the Justice League and the Avengers against each other in the JLA/Avengers. After Darkseid had thrown the Infinity Gauntlet down, both Quicksilver and The Flash darted to grab it before it fell on the ground.

Despite being initially in the lead, the Flash realized that Darkseid was going to hit the Infinity Gauntlet with his teleporting Omega Beam. He pushed Quicksilver to the side and grabbed the Gauntlet mid-air. Despite having held it momentarily, the Flash proved that he was faster than anyone else.
