Tougher Covid rules in England as Boris Johnson faces resignation calls over Xmas party – BBC News

The UK government has announced tougher Covid restrictions in England, in response to the rapid spread of the new Omicron Covid variant. It came as the prime minister Boris Johnson faced calls to resign over claims that staff at Downing Street held a party last Christmas in breach of lockdown rules. One of the prime minister’s senior officials, Allegra Stratton, has resigned after joking about breaching the rules in a video leaked to the media. 3 doses of Pfizer vaccine may be needed to protect against Omicron Covid variant – BBC News

Pfizer has said that initial lab studies suggest that a third dose of their Covid-19 vaccine may be needed to neutralise the new Omicron covid variant. The study suggested that people who had received just two doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine had far fewer of the neutralising antibodies that fight the variant. Boosting that with an additional third vaccine restored protection to similar levels provided against earlier strains of the virus. Boris Johnson triggers Covid Plan B with work from home, vaccine passports & tougher face mask rules

BORIS Johnson tonight told Brits to work from home and use vaccine passports for nightclubs and footie matches in a fresh Covid squeeze. At a gloomy press conference the PM pulled the trigger on the Government's Plan B to tackle the rising tide of Omicron cases ripping across Britain. He announced he was toughening the rules as scientists warned the NHS could be swamped by 1,000 daily patients infected with the super-strain. Flanked by top docs Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance, the PM relayed sobering evidence that the mutation is doubling between every 2.5 and three days. Giving a Commons statement at the same time Health Secretary Sajid Javid told MPs there are 568 confirmed cases variant - but the estimated current number is "probably closer to 10,000". Omicron restrictions: PM says ‘no Covid decisions will be taken without consulting the Cabinet’

The Government scientist, whose modelling bounced No10 into the original lockdown last spring, said the return of stay-at-home orders 'certainly might be possible' if the mutant strain threatens to overwhelm the NHS. He told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme: 'There is a rationale, just epidemiologically, to try and slow this down, to buy us more time principally to get boosters into people's arms because we do think people who are boosted will have the best level of protection possible, but also to buy us more time to really better characterise the threat.' There are growing concerns about Christmas freedoms after the total number of British Omicron cases rose to 437 yesterday, with the highly evolved variant now in every country in the UK and almost every region of England.
