In the 1880s, an employee of the Swiss printing company Orell Gessner Füssli invented a process to colorize black and white photographs. A Detroit-based printing office took advantage of this invention to recolor old postcards, and before the outbreak of World War I, they were able to colorize over 7 million postcards.
